Hinglish is Hindi written in English letters, mixed with everyday English words: “Diwali ki hardik shubhkamnayein”, “Naya stock aa gaya”. It is how most people type Hindi on WhatsApp, so customers read it in a second, especially younger customers and anyone more used to an English keyboard.
Our research found people search Hindi topics in English letters far more than in Devanagari: “poster banane wala app” gets about 1,600 searches a month, more than twice the 720 for “पोस्टर बनाने वाला ऐप”.
Delhi NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Mumbai and the cities of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan; and on WhatsApp Status and Instagram almost everywhere Hindi is understood.
Pick one spelling and keep it on every poster: “shubhkamnayein” or “shubhkamnaye”, not both.
Keep prices, brand names and the phone number in plain English and numbers.
Do not mix scripts in one line. Either all Hinglish, or a Devanagari greeting with a Hinglish offer below it.
Hinglish is great for WhatsApp Status and Instagram. For a big festive greeting, Devanagari can look more traditional.
