How to Cancel UPI AutoPay on Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm
In our October 2026 research into poster apps, money was the top complaint for every single app, 20% to 48% of their newest 1–2 star Google Play reviews were about AutoPay, unexpected debits or refunds. A ₹1–₹9 trial that turns into a ₹399–₹499 monthly debit is the most common story. Here’s how to stop it.
First: find out how you paid
- UPI AutoPay, you approved a mandate in Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or another UPI app with your UPI PIN.
- Google Play subscription, you paid through the Play Store’s own payment screen.
They are cancelled in different places. If unsure, check both.
Cancel a UPI AutoPay mandate
Menu names change between app versions; look for “AutoPay”, “Mandates” or “Automatic payments”.
Google Pay
- Open Google Pay → tap your profile picture.
- Open Autopay (sometimes under Payments or Mandates).
- Select the merchant → Cancel → confirm with your UPI PIN.
PhonePe
- Open PhonePe → profile → Payment Management → Autopay.
- Select the mandate → choose Delete/Remove Autopay (Pause only stops it for a while).
- Confirm with your UPI PIN.
Paytm
- Open Paytm → profile → UPI & Payment Settings → Automatic Payments.
- Select the service → Cancel Automatic Payment → confirm.
Check that the status now says Cancelled or Revoked. If you can’t find the mandate, it may have been set up in a different UPI app, or check your bank’s app, which also lists mandates.
Cancel a Google Play subscription
Play Store → your profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → choose the app → Cancel subscription. Uninstalling the app does not cancel it.
If money was already taken
- Contact the app’s support with the transaction ID and date. Many apps refund recent unwanted renewals.
- Raise a complaint in your UPI app (Help / Raise dispute on the transaction).
- Contact your bank if the app doesn’t respond.
- National Consumer Helpline: 1915 for consumer complaints; RBI’s complaint portal for unresolved bank issues.
Avoid it next time
Before you enter your UPI PIN on any trial: read the amount on the mandate screen, the frequency (monthly/yearly) and the maximum amount. A ₹1 trial that sets up a ₹499 mandate shows ₹499 somewhere on that screen. More: what to check before paying for a poster app.
